Pen Pals & National Novel Writing Month

Pen Pals & National Novel Writing Month

New Pen Pal

I am SO excited today. I got myself a new pen pal – a person you get to know by exchanging letters. He’s ten, he’s funny, and he loves to read. Since I’m trying to get better about keeping in touch with friends and family, I’ve started mailing out one or two letters a month to friends at home and away. The problem is, we all get so busy that we don’t write back. (I went to three weddings this year, and I’ve yet to get a single Thank You card—clearly, no one has time anymore).

I think my new project is great, though, since Christmas is coming up soon, and I have everyone’s addresses to mail out gifts—and all I want for Christmas now is new stationary and fun stickers to send off to friends.

So why am I excited today? Because I got my first letter from my new pen pal.

I have to say, it was very difficult to wait all week for it to arrive. Amazon Prime shipping should not be faster than a letter, but it’s good for me to work on having patience. [This is what my mother tells me.]

I know it’s the season for family and friends, and connecting with everyone, but there’s something very special about being able to keep that going all year long. I’m hoping that this is something I can continue doing even when life starts to get busier and I don’t have an hour to sit down and write letters to all the people that I love.

NANOWRIMO – National Novel Writing Month

On the upside, however, I have found out that there are months dedicated to different writing projects—did you know that November is National Novel Writing Month? It’s called NANOWRIMO, and I had no idea how many people participated in it. The goal is to write an entire book in 30 days, by writing a certain number of words per day.

I’m amazed that people have this much dedication because sometimes I forget to even write an email—but maybe I’ll give it a try. I signed up for the newsletter, and they keep saying that there’s still time to start—it’s the practice that’s important.
