How do you keep yourself happy?

Yesterday my best friend asks me “What is happiness?”. The question sounds simple, but honestly, it takes time to figure out the answer. Some friends told me that driving an expensive car or buying a house is the happiness. Others claim that only when you obtain achievements in your career path can these awards make you feel happy.

When I was in school, my professor taught me about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs included psychological needs, safety needs, belongingness and love needs, esteem needs and self-actualization. Only when people’s needs are satisfied can they feel happy. In another word, happiness comes when you feel satisfied and fulfilled. It is worth pointing out that “ what happens even if you reach all of the levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy, you do not feel happy??”

Last year, on a morning like any other, I had a sudden question: Am I happy? My friends told me how I was luckier and happier than other people, so I should be appreciated what I had. Right after I moved in America, I get a job in Google. Even though I rented a room in San Jose, I did not need to make the rental payment. Moreover, I paid off the car without getting a loan that made my friends feel surprised. However, like an incomplete Puzzle with one piece missing, I always feel I am missing something in my life that I always feel stressful and unsatisfied. Therefore, I lose my temper easily. One more time “ What is happiness”! Honestly, it took me a long time until I figure out the answer.

“Happiness is found when you stop comparing yourself to other people”

I really like this quote that kind of a short answer to Happiness. There is no doubt that you cannot feel happy if you always feel jealous. One of my friends stated that she was an unlucky person that most of her friend get married to rich husbands. Moreover, while she worked so hard, she did not get the promotion. In contrast, her coworker was so lazy; however, she frequently gets rewards also acquired new clients. I asked her “don’t you know there are many talented and kindhearted people but they are not affordable to buy a house or they suffer many serious diseases”.

What counts is the way you should work hard and pay attention to live your own life, you will succeed soon. Stop comparing yourself is a crucial method to move forward in your life. Searching your happiness in other people will make you feel exhausted, stressful and alone, but search it in yourself.

Happiness is free to do something that makes you smile

“You can’t live your life for other people. You’ve got to do what’s right for you, even if it hurts some people you love.” – Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook. This is one of the famous quotes in The Notebook – one of my favorite movie. The story is about the romantic love between Noah and Allie. Because Allie’s parents are rich that they do not allow Allie to keep the relationship with Noah. No matter how many challenges Noah and Allie face in their life, they try to tackle troubles and get married. What counts is the way they overcome the social class prejudice, they can find the happiness.

Happiness is what you feel not what you have

“ what happens even if you reach all of the levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy, you do not feel happy??” In another word, after you overcome challenges, reach all your goals, get the promotion, buy a luxury car, and live in a large mansion, do these factors really make you feel happy? Surprisingly, I feel empty…Only when you have someone and something you really love can these factor motive and inspire you to move up in your life. Happiness comes from the way you see life; it depends on how you feel your life, not on what you have or what you do not have.

Happiness is going gym

How many people are willing to go the gym after working hours? Going gym plays a vital role to release stresses in your life. I always feel good after I have an exercise to boost my energy. Therefore, how long do we need to do exercise? 10 minutes or 1 hours depends on how your mood is. No matter how busy I am, I always spending 30 minutes either at gym or home. What counts is that I feel relaxed, comfortable and stress-relieving.

I highly recommend you to read “ The Art of Happiness” that you know how to overcome  insecurity, anger. You can learn how to tackle daily challenges  of everyday life, including relationships, loss, and the pursuit of wealth. This book will illustrate how to ride through life’s obstacles on a deep and abiding source inner peace. The author is  Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet, a Nobel Prize winner, and an increasingly popular speaker and statesman.
