Hosting for Christmas? How to Make Your House Smell Like Christmas with Holiday Potpourri

I’m not hosting this year, but I am helping my aunt get everything ready for the family gets together on Christmas Eve (we usually do a Christmas Eve dinner, and a breakfast on Christmas morning). My cousins and I like to go all out with the decorations, and since we usually have other families joining us, we like to make it as festive as possible. Last year we had about 20 people over for the night and it was loads of fun.

My cousin and I were joking that it just doesn’t smell like Christmas—especially in California, where even if we’ve never had a white Christmas, we still expect warm, cozy smells we associate with the holidays and winter. So I did some research and tested a couple of batches out—and voila! Here’s an easy way to bump up your holiday hosting abilities without having to make much effort.

  • 1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 3 oranges or tangerines, halved
  • 3 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla bean
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 small branch fresh pine from the Christmas Tree (or politely ask your neighbors if you a fake tree).
  • 1 cup cranberry juice
  • Water

  • Combine all ingredients in a medium size pot
  • Fill the pot until it’s ¾ of the way full and place on stovetop. Bring to a gentle boil, before reducing the heat to a simmer.
  • Add more water as needed

This quick recipe for potpourri is actually great, because you can use it more than once—while guests are over, you can keep the pot simmering in the kitchen. You can use it for as long as you’d like, so long as you keep adding water when it starts to boil down. When you’re done for the night, just turn your stove top off—and you can use it again the next day by adding more water to the pot, bringing it to a boil, and then reducing it to a simmer again.
